Letter from the Editor

What comes to mind when you hear the word, "light"? According to Webster's dictionary, there are a multitude of meanings. Here are just a few:

  • to become light; brighten
  • to take fire
  • a source of illumination
  • to ignite something
  • understanding of a problem or mystery

Another one that stands out to me is, "the form of energy that makes it possible to see things." Even just a little light allows us to see what's around us and what's within us. And, it helps us objectively see what might inhibit us from reaching our potential.

In essence, to bring light is about increasing awareness, highlighting possibilities and inspiring new thinking and actions. It is also about listening in a way that helps others feel important.

The Greek philosopher Diogenes (fourth century B.C.) used to stroll about in full daylight carrying a lamp. When someone asked him what he was doing, he answered "I'm simply looking for a human being"; in other words, he was searching for the light/positivity in mankind.

Are you shining your light on your associates and others around you? Are you paying attention, fully and objectively, without thinking about what's on your to-do list or things you'd rather be doing?

What do your customers feel when they interact with you? Do they feel the light of leadership in you? Do they feel connection, empathy, support and contribution? Or, just detachment and disconnection?

If you communicate with light in mind, you will not only empower yourself to make a difference in others' lives, you'll find ways to make it happen in your own life. So stay positive and grateful, and keep an open mind.

And remember, "As we let our own light shine, we unconsciously give other people permission to do the same"— Marianne Williamson (Author of Return to Love).
