Letter from the Editor

When Sir Dave Brailsford became head of British Cycling, the team had almost no record of success in its 76-year history. But under his leadership, the squad won seven out of 10 gold medals available in track cycling. And, they matched that achievement at the London Olympics four years later.

How did he do it? According to James Altucher, entrepreneur, bestselling author, and venture capitalist, Brailsford applied a theory of marginal gains. In other words, the team identified all the elements that go into competing on a bike. Then, they improved each element by 1%.

Success comes from improving a little each day. It compounds. For example, when 1% compounds every day, it doubles every 72 days. In other words, "compounding tiny excellence is what creates big excellence." But, if you insist that the habit changes tomorrow, then you will certainly fail. A shift of 1% up or 1% down seems trivial, but it makes a difference.

The 1% Rule can be applied to everything. If you spend 1 less minute per day feeling regret or and use that to feel gratitude, your stress levels will go down dramatically.

Every day matters. So, when you start your day, ask yourself, how can I be a little better? Can I read a little more? Can I walk a little more? Can I eat a little better? Can I improve my relationships a little more? Even just a tiny bit?

As author/illustrator, Karen Lamb once said. "A year from now you may wish you had started today." And according to author/entrepreneur, Jim Rohn, "Success is a few simple disciplines, practiced every day; while failure is simply a few errors in judgment, repeated every day."

So, if you want to write a book, write 1% more each week. If you want to lose weight, cut calories 1% more each week. It you want to run a marathon, run 1% more each week.

Why not start today?
